Dr Koh Chong Cheng, who runs the Tanamera Clinic at Bedok South, was the physician who tended to Singapore’s first H1N1 flu patient.

He said the H1N1 flu symptoms are very similar to that of the seasonal flu. Both groups of patients suffer from fever, cough, sore throat and bodyaches. The only way to find out if you have caught the H1N1 bug is to go for a simple throat swab test.

Dr Koh stressed that if any one has any reason to believe that they have contracted the H1N1 virus, they should call for a 993 ambulance or their doctor for advice.

He said: “If you are unsure, call your GP and then get your advice from your GP. Do not go straight to the clinic because we do not want you to pass the virus to people who come into contact with you on your way to the clinic.”

So far, the fatality rate for the H1N1 flu is lower than that of the seasonal flu.

According to Dr Koh, once a patient has recovered from the H1N1 virus, he or she poses no health—risk to the public. He said Singaporeans should not stigmatise those who have been infected with the H1N1 virus.

He said: “Be it a study trip or a holiday, they do not wish to bring back a virus and cause a big community outbreak. So in these times, we should be supporting them. We should not alienate them and we should not call them names.”

According to the Health Ministry, the two peak flu seasons in Singapore are from May to June and from December to January. — CNA/vm

SINGAPOREANS are reminded to maintain high standards of personal hygiene. This means covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you sneeze or cough, and washing your hand frequently with soap and water, especially after contact with respiratory secretions (e.g., after sneezing and coughing).

We also need the cooperation of everyone to be socially responsible. This means staying home and avoiding crowded places (including trains, buses, offices), putting on a surgical mask and seeing a doctor if you have flu symptoms.

Can you imagine that wearing a long sleeve shirt with long pants cooking right in front of a hot stove. This is what the boss of this place does to make sure that every customer will get the best and only the best. Most places once the business pickup, the boss will get a replacement chef to do the cooking and wait for cash to roll in. But not at this place.

The fried prawn mee here will never fail to impress me. Its so good from not just the noodles but also the chilli and also the pork lard. I am not kidding pork lard. They also serve zhi char dishes also and they are also quite good and quite reasonably priced.

I would label this fried carrot cake the best that i have tried so far. I like it with black sauce and extra chye poh (salted radish). The carrot cake is soft, and the chye poh used here are pre-fried. Die die must try.

Chye poh again i know. But this is also really good.

His lack of confidence, according to a recent survey, is one of the top reasons for his being unsuccessful in love. Add to this a small social circle and long working hours — it’s no wonder Singapore men and women are not hitting it off. ng to lose if he is rejected.

Relationship expert Kloudiia Tay, in her 30s, reckons Singapore men have a lot more to prove. “Being Asians, they feel they need to be in the driver’s seat, but at the same time, they are afraid to lose face,” she said.

“For example, a guy once told me that if he saw an attractive girl, he wouldn’t dare strike up a conversation with her, but he would do so overseas as the culture encourages it, and he has nothing to lose if he is rejected.”

Some Singapore women, like marketing assistant Jemima Tsoi, 21, feel that men her age are “childish and immature”, which is why she would rather date those who are a little older.

According to Ms Tay, women who marry older men do so because of financial security, while those who wed much younger men do so for companionship. “These women tend to be in their 30s or 40s. They are confident, financially-secure and more decisive than younger women,” she said.

And when it comes to footing the bill on the first date, many Singaporeans still hold true to traditional ideas of courtship, with 70 per cent saying men should pick up the tab.

But more women (40 per cent) than men (16 per cent) preferred going Dutch. Quipped Ms Tsoi: “It could be that we don’t plan to go on a second date with the guy.”
